            Knowledge of human nutrition can no longer be limited to information concerning food groups, caloric values and daily requirements. Today we have an opportunity to understand the important bio-electric nature of nutrients in the cells and body fluids in which they function.

Hydrogen and the Production of Energy

            The principal source of energy for the body is Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). Hydrogen is essential to the proliferation of ATP. MegaHydrin  is an abundant source of hydrogen. Many people who supplement their diet with MegaH report increased energy, stamina and endurance. The role of hydrogen in the production of energy is explained in following papers by Drs Flanagan. There are no stimulant ingredients in MegaH.

Free Radicals

            High levels of free radicals are a major cause of aging, as well as many acute and chronic diseases. A free radical is a toxic compound that has lost a negatively charged electron, produced in the body as a by-product of metabolic oxidation. It, therefore, carries a positive charge and is unstable.  It is capable of attracting an electron away from a vital cellular site such as the electron-rich DNA. Loss of an electron can damage a cell and alter its ability to perform its special function or to replicate itself normally. Levels of free radicals are higher in people exposed to air or water pollution, toxic chemicals or cigarette smoke.

Antioxidants

            An antioxidant is a compound which has a weak attraction to one of its electrons. It therefore readily surrenders an electron to a free radical, stabilizing and neutralizing the free radical, which then becomes a stable compound. Having surrendered an electron, the antioxidant itself may temporarily become a free radical, but a less aggressive one until it captures an electron from another antioxidant in a cascade of electron transfers to milder and milder and less damaging compounds. MegaH however is the one unique antioxidant that does not become a free radical. The electron it surrenders is an extra electron. The hydrogen ion in MegaH becomes stable hydrogen, balanced with one electron and one proton.

One Antioxidant Molecule Donates One Electron

            It is significant to this discussion to realize that each molecule of an antioxidant compound, no matter how large the molecule, surrenders only one electron. Because of this fact, Drs Patrick and Gael Flanagan conceived the idea to find a smaller molecule that could also surrender an electron. This would create a more potent and concentrated antioxidant, to help quench the high levels of free radicals we experience today.

Background of Research by 

Drs Patrick and Gael Flanagan

For more than 20 years, the Flanagans have been conducting research on the extremely small mineral colloids suspended in glacial drinking water collected from an area of the world where people historically live long lives with low incidence of disease. These small colloids altered the characteristics of water making it more compatible with body fluids, such as 1) increased alkalinity; 2) lowered surface tension; 3) increased absorption of nutrients by the body; 4) increased antioxidant activity in the water as measured by the Oxidation/Reduction-Potential (ORP).

For years, in their laboratory, they attempted to reproduce these natural minerals as a potentially beneficial additive to drinking water. They finally arrived at a process which succeeded in producing similar submicroscopic mineral colloids which they referred to as nanocolloids, utilizing food-grade silica as the basic structure and small amounts of fatty acids, magnesium and potassium. Each of these minerals are recognized as important nutrients found commonly in many foods and in dietary supplements. These spherically shaped molecular structures congregated to form structures which they named Flanagan Microcluster and are further described in a following paper.   

Development of MegaH

Because of the growing awareness of the importance of antioxidants in health care, the Flanagans saw, in their microcluster technology, a way to create a more potent antioxidant. They decided to use the smallest of all elements, the hydrogen atom. They developed a process to absorb hydrogen ions into the microcluster structures, forming a silica hydride. They anticipated that the hydrogen would be stable as a dry powder, but would readily surrender the extra electron in the presence of fluids. They also knew that if it did, this small molecule would have as much antioxidant power as the large, complex compounds described above and could be the very potent and concentrated antioxidant they wanted to develop.

The result is a pure white powder generically known as Flanagan Hydrogen Enhanced Silica.
